Abstract

The many books and articles which have been written about John Henry Newman within the last sixty years have never been collected in a comprehensive critical bibliography. Such a bibliography would acquaint the student with what has been done in biography, analysis, and criticism of Newman; it would give him in compact form the numerous primary sources of information about the subject; it would enable him to distinguish easily between the comparatively rare original contributions and the many derivative works whose worth is often negligible; and finally, it would aid the scholar who will undertake the task of producing the definitive evaluation of Newman's contribution to English thought and literature. I therefore propose to take the first step in the compilation of such a bibliography by examining material which was written during the twenty years immediately after Newman's death.
