Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to identify as far as sources were available to the writer, the contemporary references contained in Thomas Campion's Umbra. In order to make this work more complete and accurate, it was found advisable to translate the poem before attempting the work of identifying the references. Furthermore, a comparison of the two editions of the poem uncovered some valuable points of information, which were considered worthy to be incorporated in this thesis.
