Abstract

This thesis proposes to make a critical examination of Carl Schurz, the orator, in the following manner: (1) It will review the environmental factors that enter into his development, considering these from early childhood to such time as his first great speech gave evidence of the fullness of the development of his oratorical power. (2) It will trace the further development of the mature orator, Carl Schurz, placing special emphasis upon his changing ideals and upon factors which further affected his oratorical abilities. (3) It will examine the actual speeches of Carl Schurz in an effort to account for his effectiveness both as regards to his subject matter and his style. As a final portion to this third section, it will consider Carl Schurz's probable permanent place in the history of oratory. This third section will contain a series of tributes paid to Carl Schurz by his contemporaries.
