Abstract

This thesis investigated coverage of religious news drawing upon an analysis of stories airing on a 10 p. m. television newscast during 1996. The research examined the types of stories written about religion and found they fell into categories dealing with prominent religious figures, religious holidays, victims, trends, social involvement and faith and beliefs. The findings lend some support for earlier studies which suggest highly institutionalized religions and prominent figures within those categories receive more coverage.
