Abstract
When 1918 brought the Weimar Constitution and the birth of Democracy in Germany the Germans felt that their dream of a better, freer, fairer society had triumphed. The old caste differences which existed during the monarchy were disappearing. Like the United States, theirs was the land of liberty, freedom, and equality; and for the first time the great German people themselves directed the destiny of the German nation. The popular belief was that the post-war reconstruction of Germany was best served by a liberal government. Tet in 1953, when only fifteen years of age, German Democracy strangled itself and left the nation under the control of a rigid totalitarian dictatorship.
