Abstract

Literature has had a long struggle to win and hold a place in elementary education upon the basis of its own intrinsic worth. its unique and independent value is not yet fully recognized in the curriculum, especially in the primary grades. The rapid development of children’s literature in recent years and the more liberalized curriculum of today constitute two factors in the increased need on the part of teachers for guidance and practical help in the field of juvenile literature. The purpose of this study is not only to present the fundamental factual material on the subject, but also to function in a practical way for the primary teacher of literature. In the later chapters, particular attention has thus been given to the use of literature with children, to some significant studies in the field, and to available sources of information on new material on the subject.
