Abstract

For centuries the puppets and marionettes have held an important place in philosophy and the theater world. A simile comparing mankind with puppets with the gods controlling the strings has long been the favorite of the philosophers. Plato compared man with a doll and his passions to the strings which caused its movements and actions. Aristotle told man to be a puppet of wood to be controlled or guided not by men like themselves, but by the Superior Being.
