Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect of certain mild antiseptics, such as Benzoic acid, Boric acid, salicylic acid, Phenol, Cresol, Thymol, on the digestive action of the enzymes Trypsin and Caroid (papain). A thorough perusal of the literature reveals only a small amount of data dealing with the influence of common antiseptics on enzyme action. Because of the important uses of enzymes in industry and the need of antiseptics for protective action, this problem is of great importance. The author wishes to acknowledge the kind cooperation of Dr. John R. Koch, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Marquette University in suggesting the subject, outlining the general problem and supervising the general research work conducted on this problem.
