Abstract
A cooling curve may be defined as a graphic representation of the relationship which exists in the elapse of time and temperature of a substance surrounded by a medium of a temperature lower than itself. There is no heat added to the substance and the only heat taken away from the substance is by means of the surrounding medium. It is time plotted against temperature. Time on the x-axis and temperature on the y-axis. Many methods have been mentioned for the determination of purity and identification of a wax. But the methods are not standardized because of the length and differences in analysis. However, very little has been done by the physical method, therefore in this thesis a thermal physical method shall be introduced to see whether it holds, any premise that might reveal the purity or composition of a wax or mixture of waxes.
This purity and identification shall be determined by obtaining the cooling curves of the following waxes in their pure state: carnuaba, beeswax, montan, and candililla. Then the waxes shall be mixed into various binary mixtures and their cooling curves taken. The curves of the mixtures shall be compared with the curves of the pure waxes. Here it is hoped that some reasonable difference in the curves shall be noticeable.
