Abstract
The present study is an attempt to indicate, through an examination of the sources, the extent of Gandhi’s indebtedness to Thoreau for the ideas and principles involved in the formers revolutionary programs both in Africa and India. The fact that Gandhi is indebted to Thoreau is readily admitted by most scholars who have written on Gandhi. How¬ ever, until the present study, no attempt has been made to examine and coordinate such material as is available. It is unfortunate that not all of Gandhi’s writings have been collected and translated into English. Until such time as this is done no complete or final study can be made.
