Abstract

Thus did Grace speak on that harp of God, which was the soul of Robert Southwell, and so ineffable was the music awakened therefrom that its exquisite echo has come down to us through the gloom of three centuries. His life was at once that of a poet, a priest, and a martyr, of the age of Elisabeth, that haughty and dread wielder of the English sceptre. Of his life and writings, sad to tell, only too little has been known, and in the recordings of literature he has been either "overlooked, or else buried in a homely foot-note."
