Abstract
G-reene Vardiman Black was born on a humble Illinois farm in Scott County, on August 3, 1836, and there spent a normal childhood. At the age of seventeen, he began his studies which culminated in obtaining the following degrees: Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Missouri Dental College in 1877; Doctor of Medicine from the Chicago Medical College in 1884; Doctor of Science from the Illinois College in 1892; and Doctor of Letters and Law from Northwestern University in 1898. His love for mechanics caused him to devote his talents to the study of dentistry. At that time the profession was in its infancy. However, due to his contributions, efficiency, and study, he left it one of the world’s greatest sciences to which pathology, materia medica, bacteriology, and surgery, are now necessary adjuncts for its study. No one man has been more instrumental than he in starting the profession on its upward trend.
