Abstract
"And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof.” Thus is described the first case of anesthesia on record. It is certain that attempts to relieve the pain of surgical procedures extend back to remote times. The ancient Assyrians before performing the operation of circumcision employed digital compression of the carotid arteries to produce insensibility and in this connection curiously enough, the literal translation of the Greek and Russian terms for carotid is “The Artery of Sleep.” The ancient Egyptians are believed to have used Indian hemp and the juice of the poppy to produce drowsiness before surgical operations. The "sorrow easing drug" which was given by Helen to Ulysses and his comrades probably consisted of such substances.
