Abstract
The France of the old regime was a very great and ancient structure -in building which fifty generations had been engaged for more than fifteen centuries. Each of these generations had left its mark upon it, always adding to the work of the past and hardly ever pulling down or removing anything. Moreover, its plan was confused, its styles were incongruous, and its parts lacked proportion. Some portions had been abandoned and threatened to fall into ruin; others were inconvenient; others were too luxurious. But, taking it all in all, the total effect was rich, the facade was imposing, and those who lived in it were better off and more numerous than elsewhere.
