Abstract

This thesis will attempt to place the director in the modern theatre. His "place" is only a few years old; his very existence as a separate individual is only about twenty years old. Materials on this subject are limited to histories of the theatre and informal discussions on theatrical figures. By quoting authorities and illustrating, by the lives and accomplishments of the most outstanding directors, the development of directing, this thesis will attempt to present the general authoritative impression of the director's place in modern drama.
