Abstract
Bicameralism~the division of legislative bodies into two chambers-originated six centuries ago in the parliament of England. This two chamber parliament provided for a separating of the estates; which existed in England at that time and gave the groups an opportunity to check each others acts. The nobility and clergy made up the higher chamber whereas the common people comprised the lower house. In this parliament a majority of each group had to assent to each bill before it would become a law.
