Abstract
Hannibal -- what a spur to the imagination the name is, what a multitude of scenes, thoughts, and conjectures it calls up. No other figure in ancient history unless perhaps that of Alexander of Macedon, so challenges the interest. Students from the time they first learn of the Second Punic or Hannibalic War and his struggle with Rome are intrigued into a more close application of their books by the thrill and the glamour of his achievements and the glory of his greatness, and ponder over the full significance of his actions and the manner of man he was. Those whom the pressure of modern life allow a continued interest in ancient affairs, dwell upon and write of his crossing the Alps with an army and upon his other exploits and attempt to draw word pictures of his character.
