Abstract
Before discussing the maxillary sinus as to abnormal conditions, it would be best to first review the normal conditions and relationships.
The maxillary sinus occupies the body o:r the maxilla, and is situated lateral to the lower half of the nasal cavity, below the orbit, and in front or the intra-temporal fossa. lts average size is about 35 m.m. in height, 30 m.m. in antero-posterior depth, and 25 m.m. in mesio-distal depth. It is shaped like a pyramid. The deepest part is above the bicuspid and molar teeth, and its opening is on the medial wall. There are usually two or three small apertures, but only the uppermost one is left uncovered when the mucous membrane is in place, and this opens from the uppermost part o:r the sinus into the lower or posterior part or the hiatus semilunaris of the middle meatus. This opening is called the ostium maxillare.
