Abstract
In view of the great number of books and articles that have been written about Seneca, it would seem at first thought somewhat presumptuous for us to add another to the list. But even a fairly extensive bibliographical search reveals the interesting fact that although the books on the Stoics in general — in which Seneca’s name is almost never forgotten to be mentioned — and the books on Seneca as a tragedian or as an influence on succeeding literature are very numerous, the works that treat of him as a philosopher are very few. Nevertheless, his philosophical works are the ones that are almost invariably quoted and have been for centuries the bountiful source of proverbs and wise sayings. We, therefore, feel fully justified in attempting this study of the life of Seneca from the viewpoint of his philosophical development and a summary of his system of philosophy.
