Abstract
Many of the dentists who practiced seventy years ago showed great skill in the laboratory phases of prosthetic dentistry. All laboratory details and procedures of denture construction, including preparation of various gold alloys, plaster of Paris, making of artificial teeth, compounding of rubber, and numerous other processes, were then considered routine duties in the practice of dentistry. At that time, crown and bridgework was another branch of the profession in which the dentist manifested his artistic and mechanical ingenuity. Elaborate bridgework requiring complex planning and preparation was in great demand. Many practitioners used their own individual designs and laboratory methods In making their appliances. And, as the demand for their services increased, these dentists found it helpful to train assistants to perform all the laboratory procedures. Many of these men, so trained, continued the necessary studies and became licensed practitioners of dentistry. Many others became interested in some other phase of dentistry.
