Abstract
By those who regard orthodontic treatment in the light of a purely mechanical procedure the etiology of malocclusion is given a position of secondary importance. While not belittling the necessity for thorough treatment, it has been found that some cases under the most careful treatment procedure have been failures. This leads one to suppose that in such conditions the causative factors, whether known or unknown, are still in force. Therefore it is of first importance to the orthodontist to get all possible information which bears on the cause of malocclusion. Medical literature contains much testimony to the effect that all parts of the body are liable to abnormalities of development from various causes. That dental structures are prone to be at variance with the normal is evinced by the fact that malocclusion of the teeth in some degree seems to be the rule than the exception.
