Abstract
Where, when and. how malocclusions started, we do not know, but evidence establishes the fact that from time immemorial animals as well as every race of mankind have been afflicted with malocclusions. Knowledge of the cause, treatment, and prevention of malocclusions and caries have been the chief interest of dental science. Far more advancement has been made and far simpler is the study of dental caries than that of irregularities of the teeth and jaws. Irregularities of the positions of the teeth and the resulting malocclusions, as in every pathological condition, is essentially a problem of growth and development and concerns itself with innumerable biological factors which taken together tend to create individuals. With such a multiplicity of causes it is not surprising that work in this field has progressed more slowly and less concretely beyond the possible causes to the definite causes. This paper will attempt to embody a summary from literature of our knowledge of the factors concerned in the possible causes of malocclusions of the teeth and irregularities of the jaws.
