Abstract
The University Wis (Lyly, Greene, Peele, Lodge, and Nash) setting their pens to paper in the latter decades of the sixteenth century, just prior to the initial efforts of the Avon bard, gradually affected that tremendous change in dramatic technique which was to make possible that grand legacy of dramatic literature which we have inherited. They were to open the way for the Elizabethan masterpieces; masterpieces that were to exhibit a development so startling in its advance when compared with such crude efforts as Roister Doister and Gammer Gurton's Needle.
