Abstract

At the time of Pope’s birth and during the early Eighteenth Century, many anti-Catholic laws were put into practice. It was a period of liberal thought on religion and attacks on revelation were discussed in the tavern, coffee¬ house and drawing room of the day. Men of letters and men high in religious circles gave their views in a liberal way. A certain group turned to Deistic beliefs. They were not fanatics, opposed to Christianity, but liked the conceit of challenging their neo-philosophic views against revelation. Bolingbroke, who was a great friend of Pope, was foremost in this set.
