Abstract
With the changes and. advances made in the industrial system in the past hundred years caused by the rapid spread of the industrial revolution and the growth of the modern factory system, we find the question and problem of the care of the aged increasingly more difficult to solve than it was before this time. In the days of tribal life the aged were looked upon as men of wisdom; they were honored and were given first consideration for their comfort. In the days of the guild system, the old tradesman and artisan worked as long as he was able to. The articles he produced, such as tools, household goods, were all acceptable to trade. The old man continued to work until senility, and feebleness and further inability to wide', his tools prevented him from turning out his products. In the first years of the factory system the laborer was employed, sometimes by contract, for a lifetime. But of late, unfortunately, the increasing perfection and speed of machinery to turn out goods, the need of agile fingers to tend the machinery, have raised the demand for young, men and make it difficult if not impossible for an unskilled laborer of forty and above to obtain employment.
