Abstract
Plants have long been classified according to their physical likenesses and structures. To sort plants according to such a basis, a botanist uses a key. In most cases, these keys are based on the flower or fruit of the plant. Sometimes there are disadvantages in using these structures, because usually they are only present for a short portion of the year. In a few cases, the seeds or fruits of plants have been used as a basis of classification as, for instance, in the Umbelliferae, Alismaceae, and Bidens.
