Abstract

The past few years have brought many vital changes in the teaching of reading in the intermediate grades.

Formerly the objectives in reading for the intermediate grades were not much different from those of the primary grades. According to the traditional point of view, the methods which proved successful in the primary grades ought to be continued in the intermediate grades. To the teacher who holds this point oi view the later grades present no new problems for solution; the problems of the earlier grades still remain except that they present themselves now in an enlarged and intensified form.
