Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to consider the nature of the advertising carried in the New York Times and the New York Herald during the Civil War period (1861-64 inc.). Particular attention is given to what is advertised, in what manner the advertising advanced or was detrimental to social betterment, content and layout of the advertisements and to exaggerated claims made in the advertisements.
