Abstract
The fern gametophyte offers a large field for experimental work, not only in the reproductive processes but in the development of prothallia from the germination of the spore. The ordinary fern spore germinates on soil or in water. Prothallia, which have formed branched cells, have been found by a number of workers, and attempts have been made by some to explain the cause of the branching.
