Abstract

The fame and recognition of Epicurus has been derived almost entirely from his ethical theory. However, Epicurus did not confine his study to this sole branch of philosophy. He became interested in the field of natural science, and as a very ardent proponent of atomism. It has been the purpose of this study to attempt to discover the reasons of Epicurus for placing his theory of ethics upon the foundation of atomism. This work, however, could not have attained completion without the aid received from the works of Cyril Bailey. The writer is very deeply Indebted to Mr. Bailey for translation of the extant writings of Epicurus and also for his very comprehensive account of the Epicurean philosophy. The work of R. D. Hicks was also a source of very helpful information.
