Abstract
An imposing and tremendous number of books have been written to criticize some phase or other of that variegated mass of plays, loosely termed Elizabethan drama, written between the coronation of Elizabeth in 1558 and the restoration of Charles II in 1660; This thesis deals with a definite series of tragedies produced in that period, all well known and discussed, yet possessing a peculiar characteristic which has to a great extent escaped the searching eye of the critics, a character-type which exerts an interesting influence upon dramatic construction and upon tragic emotion.
