Abstract
One of the great periods in English History is the reign of Queen Elizabeth. The name of Queen Elizabeth, or of "Good Queen Bess" as her people called her, is held in high esteem by Englishmen. It is true that Elizabeth did many things which appear to us cruel and harsh, and that she can be fairly charged with being unjust and even tyrannical. More than once she used her power and her high position to injure those of whom she was jealous or those whom she feared. But when all that can be said against Queen Elizabeth has been uttered, we must still admit that she was a shrewd and powerful ruler.
