Abstract
Marchantia was discovered and studied around the middle of the seventeenth century. It was named Marchantia in 1683 by Jean Marchant in memory of his father. Later when Linnaeus completed his great work, Das Pflanzenreich (1786), he named the plant Marchantia polymorpha.
