Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to show that the English novel has taken a step away from the traditional type of treatment and under a group of younger novelists is assuming a new form distinguished by its technique and novel ideas of character, plot and viewpoint.
I have quoted freely from the leading exponents of the new form believing that the technique is best illustrated in terms of itself.
At this point I wish to acknowledge my indebtedness to Chevalley "The Modern English Novel”, E.M. Forster ’’Aspects of the Novel”, Lubbock ’’The Graft of Fiction", Grabo "The Technique of the Novel”, Manly and Rickert "Contemporary English Literature", Moore "Dynamic Psychology" for general information, and Van Meter Ames "Aesthetics of the Novel”, Gould "English Novel of Today”, Marble "Study of the Modern Novel", Scott-James "Making of English Literature", H.S.Gorman "James Joyce", for information on the contemporary novel.
