Abstract
The quartic equation was studied by Arab scholars after their attention to the results of their study of a cubic had not proved very significant. Abu'l-Faradsh completed the Fihrist (c, 987), and in this he refers to a problem by Abu’l-Wefa (c, 980). The Arabs were Interested in the quartic equation only as they were in the cubic, i.e., from the standpoint of the intersection of two conics.
