Abstract
The oral English problem has repeatedly confronted me as a teacher of literature, English and dramatics in a junior technical high school. Many of my students are badly handicapped by their foreign vernacular. Just how to satisfactorily master this difficulty in order to enable them to speak English better, without their being unduly self-conscious, made it necessary for me to read material that would possibly help me solve this speech problem.
As such material is in the process of experiment, one’s conclusions are naturally only temporary and nascent. The speech periodicals number many intangible writers be¬ cause their conclusions are so varied. However, three articles stand out most prominently in my mind as those which gave me the most help. They are respectively given in their order of importance: ’’The Central Task in Teaching Speech”, ”The Relation of Language to Thought”, and ’’Hobbes* Philosophy of Speech”.
