Abstract
in view or the fact that salivary gland chromosomes are being so thoroughly studied at the present time, it is interesting to notice that as early as 1881 Balbiani reported the chromosomes in the Chironomus fly. He interpreted the "bands" which are of such importance to the cytologists today, as disks of chromatic material. The achromatic material he called "zwischensubstanz" or as it is now termed the matrix. Leydig (1883) also worked with the Chironomus fly. He thought that the "bands" were similar to muscle fiber striation. Carnoy (1884) believed the chromosomes were hollow cylinders and the chromatin arranged to give the cross striation effect. At the same time Korschelt published his opinion of the striations and claimed they were merely optical illusions of the riches running across the chromosomes.
