Abstract

If we are to know things about us, there must be reasons for them. We must be able to answer the question, why is it? Our answer to this question will give us the sufficient reason for the thing. Taking for granted that things about us can be and are known, we arrive at the self evident principle that everything that is, has a sufficient reason for its being. Since reality comprises the possible and the actual beings, there must be reasons for the possibility of the possible and reasons for the existence of the actual. The reason for the possible being is the nature of such a being. The nature of a possible being is such that it does not involve a contradiction. Yet we must bear in mind that it is mere potency. It can not exist in the actual order until it has been acted on some actually existing being, for a being can not produce that which it itself does not possess. Our discussion will be confined to such beings as give actualization of potency.
