Abstract

A number of the physiological actions of thyroxine have been characterized, but in each instance, the mechanism eliciting these actions is unknown. An explanation for the action of the thyroid hormones has been sought at the level of the whole organism, of organs, tissues, cells, and more recently, at the subcellular level. Two prominent hypotheses concerning thyroid hormone action involve effects on enzymes and enzyme systems (in particular the oxidative enzymes) and on membrane permeability. No definitive concept of the mode of action of thyroxine has evolved from information gained either in the multitude of enzyme studies or investigations of thyroxine-dependent changes in membrane permeability.
