Abstract

It will be of some interest to the reader of this dissertation to know .how it came into existence. The original suggestion that led to its writing came from Dr. Edward A. Fitzpatrick, the author of a text entitled Wisconsin, which is a survey of the socio-economic and historical development of Wisconsin. Since there are so many similarities between geography and other social sciences, Dr. Paul J. Mundie suggested that because the writer is a teacher of geography, an attempt be made to show the possible relationships between geographic factors - geology, topography, climate, soil, minerals, natural flora and natural fauna - and other social phenomena in the development of Wisconsin. To accomplish this the dissertation has been written in two parts; Part I, a brief account of the more important geographic factors; and, Part II, a number of illustrations to show how man has been influenced by these geographic factors.

As the problem has not yet been attempted by others, it required that much original information be obtained from manufacturers and prominent citizens, many of whom were willing to tell the pioneering stories of themselves and of their parents. This was done by correspondence and personal visits. Because some chapters required field work, four summer vacations and many ·week ends were spent in visiting different parts of the state to gather the needed information. !he writer also used freely from ·publications of The State Historical Society, The Wisconsin Crop and Livestock Reporting Service, Census Reports, and statistics supplied by Walter H. Ebling, chief statistician of the State of Wisconsin.
