Abstract
A close examination of the criticism on Ernest Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms reveals some of the difficulties inherent in arriving at critical judgments. First, there arises the problem of the likely intrusion of the Hemingway cult into an assessment of his literary value. Both acclamations and rejections alike often a pear to be prejudiced by the critic's response to the man. Although this is noticeable from the earliest reviews, Philip Young as late as 1966 was stating that "the public personality was too colorful to erase and the personal element in the fiction was too strong to ignore ... so it is probable that even a reasonable separation of the man from his writing never will in this case be possible ."
