Abstract
The mathematical theory of matrices has it's origin in the theory of determinants. Arthur Cayley (1821 - 1895) was the first to study matrices systematically. He introduced the name matrix and showed that their behavior is similar to that of single natural numbers. However prior to Cayley's work. Gauss (1823) had used matrix iterative- techniques to solve systems of linear equations. So, the idea is not new. Later, in 1946, Southwell gave real impetus to the use of iterative methods when he systematically considered the numerical solution of practical physics and engineering problems. The iterative method of relaxation, advocated by Southwell, was successfully used for many years by those who used either pencil and paper or desk calculators to carry out the necessary arithmetical steps.
