Abstract
The American Indian policy that was formulated during the administrations of George Washington, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson clearly stated the goals and procedures for handling Indian affairs. The goals of the policy were numerous. First, the Indians were to be treated fairly and their humanity was to be protected from malicious white actions. If these two policy goals were attained, peace would reign on the frontier and the whites could use the period of peace to teach the Indians husbandry, agriculture, religion, arts, and crafts. The ultimate goal of the policy would then be attained. The Indians would be civilized.
