Abstract
As a significant twentieth century theologian, John Macquarrie has labored to articulate an understanding of God which is adequate for the contemporary world as well as for the future. In his now-classic Principles of Christian Theology (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, second edition, 1977) he advocated that theology move from the monarchical concept of God as the supreme transcendent being found in "traditional theism" towards the concept of God as "holy Being" which is both transcendent and immanent in what he terms an "existential-ontological theism."
