Abstract

In 1865 with the founding of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Frauenverein (ADF General German Women's Association), an organized movement for women's rights began in Germany. The founding or the ADP institutionalized a process ot feminist accommodation with the social order which was begun in the reactionary aftermath of the 1848 Revolution. Accordingly, political activity of any nature was proscribed by the ADP both in its work and within the pages of its publication, Neue Bahnen, and suffrage, a goal long sought by the association's first president, Louise Otto, was no longer an issue. Such an accommodation with the social order reflected both the conservative influence of controlling for es in society and the manner in which women came to perceive them.selves and their role in society. This inevitably helped give shape to their vision, of emancipation.
