Abstract
Alverno's continuing education program originated in 1966. On February 1 of that year, Alverno's academic dean, Dr. J. D. Brunner, met with seven (7) adult women from the neighborhood who were interested in attending classes at Alverno. A discussion to identify reasons for wanting to take courses followed; reasons varied. Two of the women had degrees they wanted to continue their studies, but did not want a Master's degree; one felt a need to share with society, and wanted her college experience to assist her in this endeavor; one hoped to enrich her children through her experience and, as a second purpose, hoped to prepare herself for the years when her children would all be grown; one woman was apprehensive about studying, since it had been some time since she left college (without having earned a degree) and she wondered if her mind would be alert enough now. Another item of much concern to these women, was the mixed feelings they had with respect to being in classes with the younger Alverno students.
