Abstract
Taiwan's economic progress is remarkable. National income measured in real terms has increased at a yearly rate of 7.6 percent since 1953. Total agricultural output has increased at a yearly rate of 4.5 percent. These high growth rates have been achieved despite rapid population growth, limited natural resources and large expenditures for defense.
