Abstract

For decades, ulcerative colitis was categorized as "bloody flux" and not considered a definitive disease until Wilks and Moxon suggested it in their Anatomy and Pathology lectures in 1875. Ulcerative colitis is not a common clinical entity and is rarely observed or diagnosed by the general practitioner. In 1960, there were approximately one-half million people suffering from the disease. It is important because of the medical, social, and economic problems that it causes. By definition, ulcerative colitis is a hypersensitive type disease characterized by exacerbations and remissions, bloody diarrhea, and wasting; it may continue as a disease process in an individual for as long as fifty years and may shorten or ruin a lifetime.
