Abstract
The subject of this paper is the rhetoric of A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy by Mr. Yorick. As a rhetorical construct designed to mold our opinion of sentiment, the novel is not perfectly clear. This arises from a disappointment of some ordinary reader expectations: readers expect clear signs of what the author proposes; they expect a selective, unified presentation that centers on the main issue; and they expect more or less obvious blacks and whites. In other words, readers generally look for the logic of parliamentary debate in novels that at all profess to have some serious instructive purpose.
