Abstract
It was Sunday, December 7, 1941. At 2:20 P.M. - a few minutes after the State Department had received an unconfirmed report about the attack on Pearl Harbor - Ambassador Kichisaburo Nomura, accompanied by Saburo Kurusu, handed a lengthy memorandum to Secretary of State Cordell Hull. Having been already apprised of its content that morning through the decoding service aptly called "Magic," Hull only glanced through the document "crowded with infamous falsehoods and distortions..."
